"Calm down!" - 9 September 2008
I understand peoples frustrations, but i am an ex-WoW player and this game has definitely taking a breath of fresh air on the genre of MMORPG (which recently has been inundated with poor titles).
I have the beta version and am one of the lucky few, yes there are problems for people creating an account and also for people wanting to play the game without interruptions.
This is the beta version and the game is not online until the 15th for pre-oder customers.
So you will have all these teething problems, wait untill you have the full version and things settle down before worrying.
The game is good they will get the rest right, have faith.

"It's the End of the World (of warcraft)." - 31 August 2008
With Warhammer Online, developers Mythic have finally created an MMO worthy of threatening Blizzard. With its fun (and funny) gameplay, support for very low end PC's, innovative new systems (Public Quests) and its focus on massive RVR (pvp), Warhammer Online is a game that will keep you entertained for a long long time.
With 20 different classes to choose from, and 6 different races, across 3 massive lands, WAR really is everywhere, as they say. Within the first half an hour of gameplay you will be involved in Balanced PVP action, against possibly hundreds of other people.
Warhammer Online is based on the Table Top game from Games Workshop, a product that has been in the making for 25 years, and which influenced Blizzard when designing Warcraft. It's made by a company who are famous for their PVP MMO's, and they bring their knowledge of engaging gameplay with them.
BUT... this is not a game for "hardcore" raiders or those who like to grind XP/Coin all day to get the best gear. It's very much a solo friendly PVE game, and a balanced and fair PVP game. The best gear can just be bought when you hit the right level (of which there are only 40) for a few silver, and all quests are easy to complete on your own.
It's also not for the player who likes to beat on low level players. Try to enter a lower tier area in War, and you will be turned into a chicken, and be able to be killed in one hit!
This is really aimed at the casual player, the player who is married with kids, the player who has a job, and the player who does things other than game all day. But, in doing so, it creates an extremely balanced, fun, and exciting play style.
It's a great game, what more can I say?
- How do I know? Closed Beta Tester for some months, Preview Weekend player, and Elder Tester (meaning access to the latest Open code).

"GoA will kill your game....." - 10 September 2008
As mentioned by several of the previews reviewers, the company hosting the servers have made a complete hash of launching the open beta part of the game. Sadly, on their past record with Dark Ages of Camelot, this was something that was not unexpected to many of the gaming community, but seems to have taken Mythic (the games developers) by complete surprise.
So to the game, the interface looks and feels like WoW, anyone who has played WoW will instantly be at home. The graphics are marginally more "realistic" than WoW's cartoony style, but they are no better and no worse, which is sad considering how old WoW's graphic engine is. What the graphics definitely are, are Warhammer. Anyone who has played any of the Warhammer games will instantly recognise the style.
So the gameplay; there are three "leveling" mechanisms, experience (exp) which gives you ranks (or levels), influence (inf) which gives you class related rewards, renown (rp) which is your PvP reward and give youPvP rank.
Experience is gained doing almost anything. Instantly recognisable is gaining exp from player vesrus environment (PvE) quests, sadly it would appear very little effort has been made to make these quests interesting. Almost all of them are of the kill x number of y creatures, or fedex type, take some x to farmer A. This is very grindy, the rewards are modest and it feels slow. As you gain ranks you can train new class abilities
Happily you gain exp in public quests as well. Public quests are ongoing quests that anyone in the area can join in with, they reset when they have been failed or completed. Doing these quests gains inf which stacks up to earn you item rewards. It also earns victory points for your side (destruction or order.. think alliance vs horde) which determines who has over all control of your region... to date I haven't seen any obvious change from change if control, but due to imbalance in the players on each side, most areas I have been to are controlled by destruction.
Finally player versus player (PvP), or as it is called in WAR, realm vs realm (RvR). Initially, and notably from rank 1, you can enter RvR scenarios. These are equivalent to WoW's battlegrounds or a map in games like Team Fortress or Quake. With disperate ranks of people entering a scenario, your characters abilities become modified to level the playingfield. In addition there are open RvR areas where players can battle each other, completing quests and eraning renown, as you gain renown there is a secondary skill points system allowing you to tailor your character.
The RvR and PvE areas are kept separate so you will not fall foul to bands of high rank miscreants looking to spoil your fun, however at this early stages I can see any reason for a player who prefers PvE to play WAR. It is very definitely a PvP, or rather RvR games with some half-hearted PvE tacked on. Sadly you do need to do some PvE to "level-up"
All in all this is not a bad game, but it very quickly feels repetetive and grindy, but whether it will make a serious dent in the MMORPG market remains to be seen. One thing it has got going for it, some of the character classes are splendidly quirky with some refreshingly different abilities... for one, I would recommend anyone trying the game out to give the dwarven engineer a try, at level 3 you get an unexpected surprise. I think the game will definitely appeal to fans of the Warhammer licenses, the feel of the game stays very true to the quirky nature of Warhammer RPG and tabletop wargames.

"Disappointed" - 9 September 2008
I ordered the Collectors Edition of this game that promised Open Beta access. 3 days after Open Beta and I still cannot play.
GOA havent validated my account , have been waiting patiently for 3 days so far.
Many other people are in the same situation.
This looks like an amazing game but please be aware in Europe that GOA are handling it so be prepared for poor customer service.
Really really annoyed here. :(

"Appauling service from GOA" - 9 September 2008
With an online game you rely heavily on the ongoing quality of service provided by the game provider.
I purchased a preorder fro the open beta like many thousands of others and have been let down by GOA's shocking service and inability to register players or communicate problems. The good news is that the US version is not beset by the same problems so if you can, open a US account.

"Do not judge on publisher" - 11 September 2008
Although some blame could be sent towards GOA, publishers of Warhammer Online in EU, for having problems with the Open Beta account authentication system, the in-game reality very heavily differs from what was being experienced outside.
The game servers are exceptionnaly stable, not a single crash in 4 days. Capacity of each server is being increased as I'm writing with still no crash or signficant lag.
The game itself is enjoyable and throws some fresh air into a bored MMO player base. Let's face it, WoW is aging and it's time other games start improving on it.
Warhammer will not redefine the genre, but it as at least RvR (PvP) in a Fantasy setting done right and much improved compared to WoW's system.
If you are looking forward to figthing other people or all you are doing in WoW is Arena and BGs, then this is the game for you. If you prefer fighting monsters, WoW is still the best out there.

"Stay away from the publisher GoA" - 9 September 2008
Get invovled at your own risk, do some research on the european publisher named GoA, its not a company to get invovled with.
The game is pretty good, even better if you play the usa version.

"Game looks promising but...." - 9 September 2008
GOA is the problem, they have the job of running servers this side of the pond and experiancing there efforts so far i think they'd have problems running a bath let alone a server. It's amazing how incompetence can ruin a perfectly good game. Stay clear of the EU version and go for the US Mythic are in charge of those servers and their launch went off without a hitch.

"Don't buy the European version" - 10 September 2008
Handling of the Open Beta for this game has been shocking to say the least. GOA who caretake the game in Europe have patently failed to listen to Closed Beta testers regarding the Account Management system.
The game itself is probably pretty good, the handling of registration to gain access to said game is ragingly abysmal and has been dealt with in pretty much the most amateur manner you can imagine.
I personally *paid* for guaranteed access to the Open Beta, through the Collector's Edition scheme. Open Beta went live on Sunday 7th September, I still cannot access the game I paid for 3 days after my 'guaranteed' entry due to the incompetence and dire planning of the EU hosts..... GOA were warned that this would happen by the Beta Testers yet they 'guaranteed' everything would be fine, what a shambles. Be warned.
Buy the US version if you can - avoid the EU version like thr plague.

"GOA issue's" - 9 September 2008
Please beaware when buying this game, currently the open beta is taking place but several thousands players can't enter the open beta. This is due to the fact that beta key can't be registered on the GOA warhammer site. Most of the people (myself included) have followed the directions given by GOA to get your beta key activiated, GOA stated on the webpage it would only take 1-2 hours for a confirmation email to allow you into the game. It has now been 26 hours waitng for this email, with people having waited longer then me. Visit Wahammer Alliance webpage to see what is happening to the Europe warhammer game, the experinces of myself and others open beta gamers (if we can get an activiation email) makes you think what will happen if a simple procedure takes so long.
