4 out of 5  "Good all round Flight Simulator" - 19 October 2006
I find some are being a little to harsh about Flight simulator X hardware requirements. It does require a decent spec PC, but this is'nt unusual because each edition of Flight Simulator has needed a good PC. I remember when Flight simulator 2000 was released it suffered the same critism. It would be wise too test the Demo before purchasing or if the System is not upto running Flight simulator X then a Copy of Flight simulator 2004 is wise.

Flight simulator X does include improvements that once appreciated are exceptional. I really like some of the scenery and it looks much better than in Flight simulator 2004. Yes its true that some scenery parts like previous editions look bland, but I would rather microsoft put as much effort as possible into the scenic wonders of the world. Its more than likely that third party developers will develope scenery add ons, so that your favourite flying area looks better if it happens to be bland. Another thing is the cockpits now look better than ever and look so much more realistic. I found a substancial improvement in aircraft quality over the 2004 edition. Water now looks like water and not like a someone has painted on some bland blue colour.

The biggest change of all though is the new Mission style gameplay. These missions start of with tutorials that are not to difficult, but steadly become more challenging. I find its a great way for beginners too understand the concepts of flying in Flight simulator. Ever wondered what its like too fly a Jet when both engines have failed and then somehow land? One of harder later missions lets you just that. I really have become addicted to these missions because they are fun and challenging.

Ofcourse Flight simulator still has its tradional side remaining intact if you don't fancy doing these missions. As before this edition includes virtual Flying lessons by Rod that help no end when Flying. Lessons although challenging at time have helped me specially with navigation. Learning to fly in Flight simulator does require patience, but it helps no end when you want to fly from and to your favourite locations.

I can recommend Flight simulator X, but remember a Good PC is required if you want the simulator at its potential.

3 out of 5  "Not as bad as Flight sim 2000 well not quite anyway!" - 29 December 2006
Ok so in antisipation of this game I had a new pC built and I made sure it was very high spec,
Duel Core 3.4 gig (6.8 total)
4 gig of Ram
G force 7950GTX (1 gig card)
and 640 gig of hard drive space.

But even with all this I am not able to run it on top settings?????????
Infact I have to run in on high mid settings to stop it being jerky. The auto gen scenery is bland, if you don't belive me then get onto a PC that is running it and fly over London! Looks more like a small country town to me.
You still can't declare an emergency in the air (Flight Unlimited 3 had this 6-8 years ago). ATC is really no better than 2004 all the voices are still American (come on Microsoft get some more actors in!)
I was really disopointed with this if you want a real flight sim then get X plane instead. At least you can get regular updates on there web site and it has a built in aircraft builder as well.

Sorry I really wanted this to be great but it wasn't.
Bottom line think before you buy!

5 out of 5  "Engrossing" - 13 January 2007
This is great - OK so I can't play on the top settings (it's designed for the future, all bar Mr Gates himself on a gazillion co-processor system can't run this at top graphics!) but even on low to mid settings it works fine and is really great graphically so don't get put off. BUT ... bear in mind I do have a decent gaming machine I have to admit (Athlon 64 X2 4800, dual core, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon X19000XT - for any geeks out there like me).

The missions are fun and engageing and the training first class. Flying the big jets is truly amazing.

The only thing I would say is: don't try playing this without a joystick - I did, then bought a Saitek Evo Force two days later! (the force bit is worth it if you can afford the extra cash and it is a 5 star joystick too)

4 out of 5  "Addictive Fun." - 15 February 2007
This is a super piece of software, since it combines the 'serious flying' lessons of Flight Sim. 2004 with an updated MISSIONS section, which are great fun to fly. The realism of the scenery and the many, varied aircraft available, is very good. Now the downside- unlike Flight Sim.2004, you will not be able to print off your solo flying certificate, nor will you be able to print any of your mission rewards/badges. You SHOULD be able to, since the programme states that you can. The Quito approach mission can't be flown neither, because the speed of the aircraft can't be controlled. There do seem to be software glitches with Flight Sim X. I assume it needed more QA tests prior to general release.

5 out of 5  "Best Flight Simulator yet!" - 5 September 2007
An enjoyable game and a big improvement over previous Microsoft Flight Simulator versions. The graphics are excellent with cars, boats and airport vehicles adding a lot more detail to the game. The new in-flight views such as wing view and new aircraft such as the Airbus A321 are good additions as well. I especially enjoy the new missions in the game which contain much more challenges and excitement over the missions in previous versions. The game has also been made easier for new-comers with new tutorials and a Learning Centre enhanced from Flight Simulator 2004.

The issue people are most likely to have with the game is performance. The 2 2.40 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM on my Windows Vista run computer can only just run Flight Simulator at the 'High' settings. I would be cautious with buying the game for much less powerful systems as a lot of features in the game are lost at lower settings - though the game is still playable on many computers with a processor over 1 GHz and a reasonable graphics card if you are willing to turn down the settings. I found that Service Pack 1 further improved performance and there are apparently further updates and a expansion pack on the way.

4 out of 5  "PC Upgrade Required!" - 29 September 2007
Each Flight Simulator that gets released offers more realism and quality, and will needless to say require more CPU power to run. The transition between FS2002 and 2004 gave us better graphics, but we could still run it happily without the need to buy a whole new PC. FSX on the other hand drains your system of everything. I believe that it has been released too early, as my machine (Intel P4 3.0Ghz, Geforce FX5700 256MB Graphics, 1 Gb DDR RAM, quality motherboard & 300GB 7200RPM Hard Drives) struggle to run it smoothly, even at minimal levels. For a laugh, I put all graphics on full, and yes it blew me away for quality. The water is awesome, with varied boats & ships moving around on the glistening waves, but at around 2 frames per second it's obviously unplayable.
So I have kept FSX on the shelf for a later date, whwn my PC is running Quad core! I have since gone back to 2004 (which is still fabulous) and purchased some additional airports etc.

5 out of 5  "Great!!!" - 6 October 2007
This is a great game! Most reccomended for a high spec system the game can work to the full advantages. Much better than all the other Flight Simulator Games. 5 out of 5 on everything!

5 out of 5  "Amazing." - 11 October 2007
The best just got better.
I thought FS2004 was good but FSX is trully
a ground breaking game.

I've heard a lot of people slating FSX and that
its needs a top spec computer to run it on
but thats not true.

I've got a four year old computer and even with some of the
settings turned down this game is amazing! Sure you're not gonna get the most out of the game but it's still a lot of fun whatever system you've running.

Tha graphics are superb, Variety of aircraft is varied and the different
missions available make this game a must have for any flight sim fan.
My current favourite is the DG808 glider. Getting a toe up to 6000 feet
and using thermals to gain altitude is an amazing experience. Also Trying
to complete the Red Bull air race course is really difficult but rewarding.

In addition to all this clouds, winds, snow and rain are perfectly recreated to make that challenge of flight all the more interesting.

So in short this game can be adjusted to suit your computer
so don't listen to those reviews who say you need a top Spec PC.
I'm glad I bought it anyway and think its fantastic and hope
to upgrade my system soon to fully realise the full potential
of what is the best Flight Sim out there.

4 out of 5  "A fun game for everyone!" - 27 November 2007
Microsoft's Flight Simulator X takes Microsoft's Flight Simulator series into a whole new level, featuring graphics and detail that can't be found on other flight simulators. This includes cars; boats and an animated living environment, making the gamer feel shrouded in the real world. Also the game gives you a variety of airplanes to choose from depending on the type of flight you want to make. Another new feature included in FSX are missions, which the player is able to work through. Each mission is different based on skill level and include missions from simply landing an ultra light, to rescuing workers off an oil rig, to landing a plane on a moving bus. This, unlike the previous Microsoft Flight Simulators actually gives you the sense of feeling that you're progressing throughout the game. However what a lot of people, and myself like about flight simulator is that there are no rules to follow you simply make up your own flight as you progress through the game and gather skill as a pilot. However one thing I have noticed is that you need a very powerful computer to actually get the program to work smoothly and to have it operating on a higher graphics setting. However FSX is definitely the next step in computer games especially with its graphics and also the online multiplayer application that lets you control air traffic, or fly and communicate with people from around the globe. Microsoft Flight Simulator X is fun and open to everybody experienced or novice alike.

4 out of 5  "The Secret to FSX" - 18 December 2007
First, to make a point:

Contrary to popular beleif, you do not need the Godfather of all Systems to run this game. You do not need the mother of all systems to run this game on respectible settings. You do not need to spend your life savings on a system to run this game at full settings. Infact, you can do it for around £500, and that was 6 months ago.

My system specs:

-Intel C2 6420 (overclocked from 2.13GHz to 2.4GHZ on stock cooling)(£99.85)
-Geforce 8800GTS 320 (£153.18+vat)
-Atrix 650W Silent Power Supply (£27.99)
-Maxtor 320gb 7200RPM SATAII HDD (36.00+vat)
-ABIT Fatal1ty Motherboard (58.18+vat)
-Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (5-5-5-12) (59.57+vat)

My FSX Settings: Ultra High

My Monitor: Samsung SM226BW 22" Widescreen (1680x1050 res)

My Gameplay: Smooth as any simile you want

The key here is the graphics card: The GeForce 8800's most basic model is around THREE TIMES BETTER specification wise than the best GeForce 8600 model. Nothing else listed here is that different from what other reviewers have listed-I cannot stress enough how important a good graphics card is.

In short, if you are serious about your flight sims, you may want to spend a bit upgrading your system (or, build your own)

Second, To Review the game:

As realistic a flying experience as this can come from no other. The new 3D virtual cockpit is just what was needed (You can look around the flightdeck, and operate everything in view), and adds great realism. Every plane, as expected demonstrates its own flying characterstics-it is possible to detect differences between the Maule Orion variants (with and without skis).

The scenery is good, not excellent. Built up areas are represented by large block buildings, except in larger cities, where the skyline is similar, but again, not perfect. However, saying this, it is an improvement on 2004, and besides, it can't be that easy to cram the whole world into 15GB.

The airports are largely accurate, the bigger the airport, the more accurate it is-don't expect your local field to be a carbon copy, and don't bother looking for your house when you take off from it :p (I can't even find my university)

The missions are enjoyable, challenging for any skill level (possibly exempting those with an ATPL), and come in great quantity.

All in all, with the right graphics card, this game is a winner, providing the most realistic flight simulation available today. It can be used for fun flying, serious flying, to assist in flight training, and for landing a 744 on an aircraft carrier. Happy Landings-JM FL
