Editorial: The original The Sims is the best selling PC game ever but after four years and seven expansion discs it's finally starting to look a bit long in the tooth. As the first official sequel almost everything in The Sims 2 has been expanded and improved on from the original, even if the basic idea remains the same: to create and control the lives of your virtual characters.

The entire scope of the game has now increased--your characters age and give birth to children. Sims remain children only for a few weeks, before spending most of the game as adults and then eventually dying and the game carrying on with their children and grandchildren--if they have any. Another big new feature of the game is the introduction of specific "aspirations" for your sim, which can be anything from a specific career to marrying a particular person. Each sim also has their own "fears", which can be anything from living alone to losing their hair. Which of these situations end up coming true becomes the main influence on whether your sim is happy, the attainment of which is the only true goal in the game.

Apart from all these new features the graphics have been severely overhauled are now in full 3D and more in line with the recent console spin-offs. This is a must buy for anyone that's ever enjoyed the original titles, but the new features should also be enough to entice sceptics to the fold as well. --David Jenkins

5 out of 5  "A reviewer who has actually played Sims 2!" - 20 September 2004
I have been playing the Sims 2 pretty much constantly since it arrived on my doorstep four days ago (Sep 17th).
As a huge fan of The Sims I had been eagerly anticipating Sims 2... and I was not disappointed.
Some reviewers have said the graphics are awful - but on my 3 month old computer they are perfect - and way WAY better than Sims 1. However the system spec is high - my sister had to have her hard drive upgraded to play Sims 2, (but her PC is about four years old). The upgrade only cost £40 from PC World - so there's no excuse not to do it.
As for another reviewer saying the life of an adult Sim is only 30 days in Sims 2 - they obviously haven't discovered the 'Elixir of Life' potion (isn't that phrase stolen from Harry Potter?) which you can buy if you keep your sims Aspiration Meter at a good level. This potion adds an extra five or so days onto the life of your sim every time it is drunk, and is quite cheap and easy to get hold of, so your sims can live forever just like in Sims 1, if you want to play it that way.

In a nutshell, advantages of Sims 2;
- Much better graphics, sims now have facial expressions etc
- Can customise Sims to look far more like yourself and family/friends - can adjust every aspect of the face - make lips wider, eyebrows lower, put makeup on etc etc
- Sims get fat if they eat unhealthily and dont do any exercise, very amusing! (you can exercise it off)
- When lady Sims get pregnant the tummy expands in stages until birth of baby - great!
- Babies grow into toddlers, then kids, teens, adults, elders. You can control them at every stage of their life except babies. With toddlers you need to potty train them and teach them to walk and talk! Much wider range of interations with babies and toddlers. The teenager stage is hilarious - first kisses aww!
- New Aspiration Meter and Wants and Fears game play is a great new feature and is the major change from Sims 1.
You set your Sims with a lifetime Aspiration - one of Family, Fortune, Romance, Knowledge and Popularity - this influences their wants and fears. Endulge their Wants (eg. have a baby, for a Family orientated sim) and their Aspiration Meter goes up, enhancing their mood and accumulating points (not Simoleans)which allow you to buy them rewards, such as the aforementioned Elixir of Life (not available to buy with Simoleans). (There is also still the same eight needs bars such as hygeine as there was in Sims 1)
If the whole Aspiration thing seems complicated, dont worry. There's a 'what's new?' tutorial on the Sims 2 CD which guides you through everything that's different from The Sims. It's like how we all found managing the Sims needs bars a challenge when we started playing Sims 1, but now it's second nature. This is how the Aspiration meter becomes too.
- The careers thing is pretty much the same, except occassionally you'll get a work dilemma and if you make the right choice for your Sim you'll get a huge reward, eg. I recently got 20,000 simoleans! However if you get it wrong you can get demoted and skills points deducted. You can choose to opt out and make neither choice if you like to play it safe. There seem to be only 15 or so career paths so I'm sure we'll have add-ons for the Sims 2 soon enough.

I could go on and on but there's too many points to write down, so you'll have to discover the joys of the Sims 2 for yourself! I'm sure there's loads of things I haven't yet discovered.

General advice - if you liked The Sims you'll love Sims 2. I have no complaints, except that you need a good PC because of the high quality graphics. Sims 2 is a great improvement and a joy to play.

5 out of 5  "This game is brilliant." - 18 September 2004
I bought The Sims 2 today and it is amazing! The graphics are all new, the interface easy to use, and the create-a-sim feature is detailed beyond belief- you can ACTUALLY make yourself look EXACTLY like yourself.

The all new features are great; The aspiration rewards system works well, and there are rewards for reaching the top of your chosen career- plus you only work certain days now in the Sims, rather than every day.

DNA is also a big part of this game- your son will look like his father but he'll have his mothers eyes, for example. Also, there are some nice new touches- instead of "go here" next to an empty space on a floor you can now "skip here", or, if outside, "look at clouds" another funny touch- "make aeroplane" using your newspaper. You can now greet the paper girl and other people who were just part of the scenery in the original. Also- the camera is amazing; you can look at it from any angle, the rotation and zoom is no longer in 3 or 4 positions.

The story mode is yet another great feature- you can make films and take photographs, documenting your Sim's life and then putting it on the web for others to see. One thing that made me feel nostalgic was the Burbs- Johnny, who was the child of the Burb family in the Sims 2 is now an adult with a wife and child.

This game came at just the right time for me- I was just getting bored of the original and this just fell into my lap. Will Wight has come up trumps again and I wouldnt be surprised if this overtakes its predecessor as the best selling PC game of all time.

5 out of 5  "Still love it!" - 25 May 2005
I've had this game since it first game out and I still play even today....it totally rocks! Although I can't compare it to the other Sims games as this is my first actual purchase of an Sims game.
4 discs to download on the PC! seems quite overwhelming but it's not that bad as you can play the quizzes it gives you when you are downloading the game to your computer.

The best bits: unbelievable graphics, always fun to play, making your own sim skins and downloading skins from the internet and basically variety of things to do!

The bad bits: can't really think of any except if you have programs that get updated constantly from online then it erupts the game. Although the good thing about that, is that the game kind of pauses so you can still save the game!

5 out of 5  "Fantastic - but get the patch!" - 24 May 2005
I've had this game since January and I'm still not bored of it. The game is as big as your imagination makes it, and only gets boring if you run out of ideas - in which case you just need to look around you, on tele, in the news or at family members to create new stories.
I have never played The Sims, but The Sims 2 is fantastic. There are a few glitches, but you can download a patch from www.thesims2.ea.com and you can also download new objects, lots and sims from there too. I love playing with families that have a bit of history so the exchange on the website is handy for that.
Another good website is www.modthesims2.com where you can download "mods" so that you can do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to improve the reality or playability of the game.
All in all, a fantastic game, just so long as you don't concentrate solely on the family-making aspects.

5 out of 5  "The best thing since sliced bread" - 11 April 2005
i bought this thinking that it would not be much diffrent from the original but i was very wrong, its amazing. my children recreated our own home and family in minutes, truely amazing. if anyone has ever wondered what it would be like to play god...then this is definatly the game for you!

5 out of 5  "Fantastic game!" - 2 April 2005
This is a great game. I originally played The Sims 1 and I really enjoyed it so I bought The Sims 2. The graphics are excellent even on my poor NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 that came with the computer. I have been looking through the bad reviews and they are all people complaining that it won't run on their computer because they havn't checked the system requirements. I wouldn't say that I have a top of the range PC. I have 512 MB RAM and an Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz CPU and it runs fine on mediumish settings.

Anyway, this game is a great improvement from the original Sims game. Mainly because of the wants and fears. i found myself getting bored after playing The Sims 1 for a while because I had got all their needs to full and their experience points things (I forget what they are called...) also at full so they would just stand around for ages doing nothing. Now that they have wants, when their needs are full they have something to do.

When your Sims are at the baby stage of time they are much more interactive than they were in The Sims 1. You can even teach them to walk and talk.

Overall, great game, very enjoyable. If you enjoyed The Sims 1, get this, if you didn't get this anyway, if you've never played it, get it! Seriously, fantastic game!

4 out of 5  "Simalicious!!!!!!!" - 6 March 2005
A good and humourous game, outstrips its earlier version easily. More features, more design tools, better character interaction and the chance of Woo-Hoo!!! Recommend to all, only downer found is an ability for slow-down and intermittent crashing, though this can be repaired by visiting the Sims2 site. Overall a very enjoyable and challenging game, fun enough to play, imaginative enough for long time play.

5 out of 5  "Love the game!!" - 30 January 2005
I would really recommend The Sims 2, especially if you loved the original Sims. The graphics are amazing, and it is so much more advanced, including every little detail the Sims forgot about first time round. You can watch the offspring through each stage of their life, not just baby-child-adult. It is fast moving and very realistic, getting you hooked from the start. The first time I played this, I spent ages creating the family, adjusting every detail to perfection. It is well worth the money it costs, and if you are thinking of buying it, I would say definitely go for it! The only bad thing about it is you can't just play for 5 minutes, you get carried away and end up spending hours! Well if that is a bad thing...!!

5 out of 5  "Even less hours in the day now!!" - 12 January 2005
What a fantastic Game!

I have only had this for a few days but am seriously hooked, what an amazing improvement on an already brilliant game!
Am thinking of quitting my job just so i have more time to play this, only joking, but thats how addictive it is.

Once you got the hang of Sims 1 and could do everything it got a bit boring, but Sims 2 just provides you with different challenges so you do not get bored with it.

Considering it is such a huge game it didnt really take that long to install either, no more than 20 minutes and while you are a installing there are little games for you to play.
This game really does get you much more involved than the first one.

If you liked the First Sims you will LOVE this one!!
If you have never played Sims before but are considering it then buy it! Its great!

Very Impressed!

5 out of 5  "Great game make sure you get the patch" - 30 December 2004
I find this game is great fun. A lot of people in previous reviews have mentioned bugs and having problems with playing on limited users but ea have now released the patch for the game solving a lot of the bugs. Children are no longer kidnapped etc and limited users can now play the game. Any people who need the patch it can be found on the sims official site.

The game promises constant surprises and you can really develop your sims with the new system.
